What is 88 fuel at RaceTrac? ›

Unleaded 88 (also known as E15) is gasoline which includes up to 15% ethanol. The additional ethanol increases the octane while reducing the price at the pump. Unleaded 88 has been approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for use in all 2001 and newer cars, trucks and SUVs.

Unleaded 87, 89, and 93: We offer regular, midgrade and premium fuel at all locations. These can be identified at the pump as 87 (regular), 89 (midgrade) and 93 (premium). The number represents the amount of octane found in the fuel.

Each of our locations is wholly owned by our parent company RaceTrac, Inc. RaceTrac, Inc owns the site, the building, and the gas facility.

It's good for your engine. Unleaded 88 burns cleaner and slower than regular unleaded, which has an octane rating of 87. The higher octane level helps boost horsepower and efficiency. It's good for the environment.

Unleaded 88 is usually noticeably cheaper than traditional gasoline because ethanol is a less expensive fuel source than crude oil. And, because up to 15% of Unleaded 88 is made of the biofuel ethanol, it uses less crude oil per gallon than traditional gasoline.

Why is this? Gas stations are in fact legally allowed to charge a customer extra if they choose to use a credit card to purchase gas. This is because the gas station owners pay an interchange fee to the payment networks. They often pass this fee on to the consumer to recoup that additional cost.

But because it has more ethanol than regular gas, it's less fuel efficient. Will buying it actually save you money? Kinda, sort of and maybe are the best answers. The extra ethanol in unleaded 88 probably won't damage your engine — but your vehicle will likely get less miles per gallon.

Unleaded 88 is a great choice for all cars model year 2001 and newer (equivalent to nine out of 10 cars on the road today).

Different grades of fuel

It comes down to the amount of ethanol made from things like sugar cane, barley and corn that is added to the fuel. The U.S. EPA says Unleaded 88 can be used in vehicles that are newer than 2001.

Octane level is one of the most significant differences between racing fuel and fuel for street vehicles. The gasoline at a gas station ranges from 87 to 93 octane. Racing fuel ranges from 100 to 120 octane. Since racing engines operate with higher compression ratios, they need higher octane racing fuel to operate.
